Built nearly 200 years ago, Haveli Dharampura takes its name from its storied neighbourhood – once home to trading families and temple clusters, and now home to a cluster of Jain temples and the towering Jama Masjid. Over time, the Haveli fell into neglect before being carefully restored over six years by a team of traditional craftsmen, reviving its original architectural elements, materials, and spatial character. The project went on to receive recognition for Cultural Heritage Conservation under the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards.

The central courtyard - the architectural heart of the haveli - remains the organising axis of the house, around which galleries, rooms, and living spaces unfold.

The fourteen guest rooms, named after gates and markets of Old Delhi, reflect a layered cultural geography.

The revival of this project seamlessly lends itself to the nearby Golden Haveli, balancing Mughal-era architectural language - jaalis, stained-glass windows, ornate pillars, and carved woodwork – with contemporary comfort, inviting guests to step back and experience a more intimate extension of the original haveli experience.

Haveli Dharampura delivers a five-star experience tailored to both discerning leisure travellers and business guests. It is arranged around its central courtyard, where a fountain anchors the house's rhythm. The fourteen rooms invite you to step back into a bygone era, their architectural flourishes enhanced with intricate jaalis, trellis patterns and other carved detailing. Spread across three levels, the Haveli features two Shahjahan Suites, six Diwan-e-Khas rooms, and six Jharoka rooms. The spaces tell a story of two Indias: one that speaks of its history, and the other that listens and restores it. Golden Haveli, a short distance away, offers twelve rooms organised around a similar courtyard typology. They are upholstered with thoughtful art, Mughal-style wallpaper, and four-poster beds that reflect that old-world charm. While the Jahanara rooms encircle the central courtyard in intimate scale, the Mumtaz Mahal suites offer a more ornate experience. The Gandhi Suite reflects restraint and simplicity, drawing on the Mahatma's philosophy. Together, the two havelis offer distinct yet connected experiences rooted in Old Delhi’s architectural and cultural memory.

Stepping into Haveli Dharampura feels like stepping away from the density of Chandni Chowk into a quieter architectural world. The haveli stands within Shahjahanabad — the 17th-century Mughal city of Delhi — where religious, cultural, and mercantile life have coexisted for centuries around Jama Masjid and its surrounding bazaars. The restoration of Haveli Dharampura marked a turning point for the neighbourhood, demonstrating how historic homes within Old Delhi could be revived with sensitivity and continuity. Just a short distance away, Golden Haveli extends this narrative, offering a complementary heritage stay within the same historic lane.

Design & Concept

The restoration of Haveli Dharampura followed traditional conservation methods, preserving original materials, architectural proportions, and spatial organisation rather than altering them. The structure uses lakhori bricks, lime mortar, carved stone, and timber elements characteristic of late Mughal domestic architecture. The courtyard remains central to the experience, regulating light, airflow, and movement - an architectural response suited to the climate and density of Shahjahanabad. The project demonstrates how heritage buildings can remain living spaces rather than static monuments.

Know Your Host

The meticulous restoration of Haveli Dharampura was led by the Goel family, whose engagement with Old Delhi’s heritage shaped the project. Vijay Goel, along with his son and daughter, Siddhant and Vidyun, undertook the revival of the haveli not only as a hospitality space but also as a step toward preserving the romance and identity associated with Delhi’s past. This arduous task strengthened the case for Delhi’s inclusion on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Cities, reinforcing the importance of conservation through lived, functioning spaces, rather than static monuments.

Dining

Nestled within the beautifully restored 200-year-old haveli is the restaurant, Lakhori. Named after traditional Mughal brickwork, it draws on Old Delhi’s culinary heritage, combining Mughlai cuisine with regional and street-inspired flavours. The weekend high tea on the Haveli’s rooftop and the Chef's Tasting Menu, by the owner, Mrs Preeti Goel, are not-to-be-missed experiences.

The Haveli experiences let you soak up Old Delhi in an immersive, observational and non-spectacle way. Guests may explore the land through guided heritage walks across Shahjahanabad, food trails through Chandni Chowk, and enjoy kite flying from the rooftop. Evenings often centre around live Kathak in the courtyard, accompanied by Hindustani classical music — a continuation of North India’s long performance traditions. The experience is shaped as much by the sounds of Jama Masjid, pigeons in flight, and the changing sky above Old Delhi as by the architecture itself.
