Set on the tiny island of Kakkathuruthu, Kayal Island Retreat is an intimate four-room boutique retreat surrounded by the backwaters of Lake Vembanad. It can be reached by only a traditional rowboat.
Founder Maneesha Panicker transformed a former artists’ residency into a place that borrows quietly from local homes, with reclaimed timber, tiled roofs, outdoor showers, open verandahs, and a wall-less dining pavilion by the water. Its appeal lies in how closely it remains tied to the island around it, from the food and materials to the farmers, fisherfolk, boatmen, and village traditions that shape the stay.

What you would love
Plan the village walk for the evening , when the island is cooler and local life is still unfolding. Stay on for the boat ride back at dusk, and ask about the moonlight dinner in advance, as it is entirely weather-dependent.

Your Stay at Kayal Island Retreat
Kayal’s four rooms are a short walk from each other. The small rooms feel intimate and cocoon-like, ideal for couples, with a private bath garden and shared tea and coffee setup on the verandah between the two entrances. Further down the path are the larger rooms, each spacious enough for an extra bed and featuring an outdoor shower that opens onto a small private garden - perfect for lounging. Every room retains the same understated character, with old teak cupboards, a quiet reading corner, and walls adorned with local art.

Destination
Kakkathuruthu, or the “Island of Crows,” is a tiny private island set in the middle of Vembanad Lake and that can be reached only by a traditional rowboat. Walk along its narrow paths and you pass coconut palms, ponds, paddy fields, ducks on the water and true to its name, plenty of crows. Birdlife is abundant, especially during the migratory season.
A close-knit community of farmers, fisherfolk and boatmen remains closely tied to both the lake and the mainland beyond it. The island’s wide western views across the lake make its sunset undoubtedly the best in the world (as rated by Nat Geo Traveller in its Best 24 Hours on Earth article).
Design and Concept
Created from a former artists’ residency, Kayal was restored rather than rebuilt from scratch, with reclaimed timber, old teak cupboards, traditional doors and windows, tiled roofs, and locally inspired art giving the interiors their warmth. The layout is equally understated: just four cottages, open verandahs, a wall-less reception and dining pavilion, and pathways that allow the landscape to remain in view. Open-to-the-sky bath gardens blur the line between indoors and out, while small details, from copper vessels to inherited furniture, make the decor feel collected rather than styled. Even the boat-only arrival adds to the concept, slowing the pace before guests reach the property.
Know your Host
Maneesha Panicker created Kayal after stumbling upon Kakkathuruthu while scouting for an office space and finding herself completely drawn in by the island’s sense of calm. She is known as much for her eye for design as for her instinct for slow, immersive travel. Speak to her about Kayal and the conversation may easily turn into a walk across the island, a long lunch, a canoe ride, or a story about the community she has come to know so well over the years.
Dining
Meals are served in a breezy, open pavilion right by the water, so even a simple lunch feels special. The food stays close to Kerala’s backwater roots, with fresh local produce, home-style cooking, and the day’s catch often coming straight from nearby fishing families. Expect home-style dishes with regional staples such as avial, pachadi and thoran. The standout though is the moonlight dinner on the boat - a table for two set out in the middle of the lake with barely any light around and nothing but still water and night sky for company.
Experiences
The best way to experience Kayal, as Maneesha puts it, is to “put away all gadgetry, lock your watch up, and take a stroll into another era.” A guided village walk across the island offers a closer look at tropical plants and trees, small pockets of farmland, fishermen sorting the day’s catch, and the way local life moves between the backwaters and the mainland.
Cooking lessons with Naina, Kayal’s in-house homemaker-turned-chef, cover everything from a traditional sadhya to house specialities such as coconut pumpkin soup and tapioca fish curry. There's Ayurveda, yoga and meditation and evenings can be arranged around Kathakali or Kol kali performances or a simple temple trail. Explore Around
Kakkathuruthu Island
Best done slowly with a staff who knows the island's rhythms, when the day's catch comes in, which pond to pause at and who's likely to wave you over for a chat. An hour is enough to cross Kakkathuruthu end to end, but it's worth lingering.
Fort Kochi
Best explored on foot, preferably with a local guide. Spend the day visiting the synagogue, old churches, galleries, cafés, and Chinese fishing nets, with a stop to see traditional boatmakers at work. Ask for a visit to their Fort Kochi hotel and art gallery. Have a meal at their cafe.
Marari Beach
Visit in the late afternoon for a quiet walk along the shore, and stay for the sunset.
