Sustainability Story of MANVĀR Kumat, Thar Serenity Camp

MANVĀR Kumat, Thar Serenity Camp belongs to the Thar, a landscape that can appear austere to the inattentive and astonishingly alive to those who understand its rhythms. Its Pinwheel story is one of desert restoration, solar energy, water restraint, cultural continuity, and local livelihoods.

Solar energy is used extensively for lighting and hot water, while rainwater harvesting and drip irrigation respond to a region where every drop must justify itself. Plastic is avoided, RO-filtered water replaces bottled water, wet waste is composted, and dry waste is sent for recycling.

The camp’s biodiversity work is particularly significant. MANVĀR is reclaiming agricultural land to restore desert forest shrub and protect native desert biodiversity. It has purchased 400 acres, with over 250 acres dedicated as a desert park near the camp. In a landscape too often dismissed as empty, this restoration recognises the Thar as an ecosystem of subtle richness.

Culture is part of the stay’s living fabric. Local artists, musicians, craftsmen, and art forms are showcased through performances at the camp, while camel herders, local performers, staff, and community members benefit through tourism-linked income.

Only a small part of the land is used for the hotel, allowing the rest to flourish. Local sourcing reduces food miles and keeps the experience rooted in place. MANVĀR’s great achievement is that it treats the desert not as a stage set, but as a living system, one that rewards restraint far more than spectacle.
