Stay at least three days to experience Nubra. Early mornings in the orchards and night skies with the Milky Way often become defining moments of the stay.

Destination

Breathtaking views of the Trans-Himalayan region are your backdrop for this amazing destination. Outside Leh and past the Indus Valley, the famed Khardung La Pass unfurls at around 18,379 feet.

Here, in the tiny hamlet of Teggar, and nestled amidst an orchard of elm, poplar, willow, apricot and apple trees, lies Lchang Nang Retreat - The House of Trees. The Retreat is located between three mountains: the Karakoram, the Himalayan Ranges and the Saltoro Ridge.

Design and Concept

Design and Concept

Architecture follows traditional Ladakhi building principles using stone, mud, and timber, eschewing concrete and allowing thermal stability suited to the climate.

Thick insulated walls, passive solar orientation, and controlled openings retain warmth while maximising natural light. The layout preserves orchard ecology and water channels, and built form remains secondary to landscape, allowing the land to shape the experience.

Know Your Host

Lchang Nang is owned by an eminent Ladakhi family that has been a proponent of sustainability and slow living in one of the valley's quieter villages. The resort was opened by the eldest son, Rigzin Kalon, who shifted gears from a career in engineering to return home to his village and launch Lchang Nang.

The family’s knowledge of the local landscape has translated into this beautiful property, allowing them to showcase the region and create value for the community.

Constant innovation in experiences and working with locals has ensured that Lchang Nang stays ahead of other hotels in the region and creates intimate experiences that showcase the full destination story, including culture, architecture, and, now, wildlife.

Facilities

Facilities are designed for slow engagement with the landscape. The retreat includes a wellness spa, library, indoor gathering spaces, hammocks, bonfire areas, and open walking grounds through orchards and along the river edge. Spaces encourage rest and observation, rather than activity-driven use.

Dining

True to the ethos of Lchang Nang, the food served here is a celebration of local, seasonal, and organic ingredients, with produce sourced from its solar-powered hydroponic greenhouse or from local farms.

The dining room is open throughout the day for snacks, tea, and coffee, and the menu is a beautiful blend of Ladakhi, Tibetan, Indian, and Continental flavours.

In case one wants to dine al fresco, there are options from sundowners, picnic high-tea experiences in the valley meadows, to a full-blown, five-course, romantic dinner experience under the elm trees.

Experiences

Lchang Nang offers an easy retreat from the noise of everyday life where guests can reconnect with nature, curl up in the sunlit library, or wander unhurriedly through the village lanes.

Yoga sessions take place in the sunroom, while restorative wellness therapies are available for deep relaxation. As evening temperatures dip, the Fireside Bar comes alive with music and the quiet pleasure of gathering around a campfire.

Engage with the region's living culture through guided walks to nearby villages and monasteries for a quiet insight into Ladakhi life. The Old House (Zhimskhang) offers a glimpse into Ladakh’s past, with its kitchen preserved as a living museum maintained by a local women’s self-help group.

Guests are welcomed here with butter tea and traditional Ladakhi snacks served by women in customary attire. At Amaley’s Lab, a DIY earthen space, workshops on native natural products invite guests and community members to learn and engage more deeply with nature.

A sustainability tour further introduces the eco-initiatives and environmental practices of the ‘House of Trees.’ For children, activities such as rock painting and curated scavenger hunts foster creativity, curiosity, and a sense of adventure, nurturing lasting connections with nature. At the retreat’s traditional Ladakhi tea station set among the trees, guests can help themselves to freshly brewed tea, coffee, or sea buckthorn juice.
