RAAS Hotels is a collection of five distinct properties across Rajasthan and the Kumaon hills, each rooted in place and shaped by a clear point of view. Founded in 2009 by brothers Nikhilendra and Dhananjaya Singh with the opening of RAAS Jodhpur — the city's first boutique hotel, built around an 18th-century haveli at the foot of Mehrangarh Fort — the brand has since grown to include an Aravalli hill fort palace near Udaipur, a wilderness camp beside a reservoir in rural Rajasthan, a 19th-century royal residence in Jaipur, and a retreat in the forests of Kumaon. No two properties are alike.

What holds them together is a shared commitment to heritage, to sustainability practised on the ground rather than announced in brochures, and to the belief that luxury and responsibility are not in conflict. Since 2016, RAAS has operated without single-use plastic across all its properties. Water consumption has been reduced by 85% through greywater recycling, aerators, and rainwater harvesting. Each hotel maintains its own kitchen garden; since 2020, RAAS has grown its own organic wheat and pulses.

The portfolio has been recognised on Condé Nast Traveller's Hot List and Gold List, in Tatler's 101 Best Hotels in the World, and with the Aga Khan Award for Architecture — among the most demanding juries in the world. RAAS Jodhpur was awarded Holiday Building of the Year at the 2011 World Architecture Festival. RAAS Chhatrasagar was the first hotel to be listed on RARE, a distinction that speaks to how early, and how deliberately, this brand positioned itself.

The 13 rooms and suites at Rajmahal Palace range from the Sukh Niwas — intimate, chic, with a shared courtyard — to the Maharaja Suite, and Maharani Suite, the palace's grandest apartments. The Palace Suites and Royal Suites sit between these extremes, each with a distinct character and furnished with a combination of family heirlooms, grand portraits and contemporary pieces. The Queen Elizabeth Suite sleeps four and carries the distinction of its former occupant with appropriate understated elegance. Destination

Jaipur — UNESCO World Heritage City and capital of Rajasthan — has drawn travellers for centuries, and for good reason. Amer Fort, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, the City Palace, and Johri Bazaar are among India's most visited landmarks. What Rajmahal Palace offers is the city from the inside: not as a tourist destination to be consumed, but as a living inheritance to enjoy, however briefly. Built in 1729 by the Maharaja of Jaipur, the palace became the official residence of the British Resident in 1821, which is why its bones are Rajput but its personality is something else entirely: a marble staircase, Art Deco details, mirrored ceilings, and the particular atmosphere of a place that has held more than one world within its walls. In 1958, Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II and Maharani Gayatri Devi chose it as their private residence, and that romance endures. The Maharani wrote of it in her memoir, A Princess Remembers, as a place of charm, character, and pleasantly informal atmosphere. It remains the primary residence of the royal family.

Design and Concept

The refurbished interiors of Rajmahal Palace set it apart from any other heritage property in Rajasthan. The design does not reach for the Mughal grandeur or desert-fort drama that defines most of the state's luxury hotels. Instead, it leans into what the palace actually is: an Indian Art Deco residence with a Rajput flavour and a British character. The facade of pink for one infuses a romance into every stay. Other bold colours — playful pinks, deep tones — sits alongside meticulously restored frescoes. Crystal chandeliers catch light above marble floors. The overall effect is regal and inviting; personal without being informal. Tranquil gardens surround the palace, with an Art Deco swimming pool flanked by fountains at its centre. Over 100,000 square feet of grounds can accommodate intimate gatherings or celebrations.

Know Your Host

RAAS Hotels manages Rajmahal Palace in partnership with the royal family of Jaipur, whose heirlooms, photographs, and polo memorabilia remain on display throughout the property. The royal family still lives here. Nikhilendra and Dhananjaya Singh of RAAS bring to the partnership the same design sensibility and commitment to service that have defined their other properties — but at Rajmahal, the hosts in the fullest sense are the family who still call this home.

Dining

Rajmahal Palace has four dining options, each with its own character and hour. The Bar is an Art Deco lounge off the front verandah — plush sofas, gilded details, expertly crafted drinks. The Polo Lounge is Tiffany-blue and surrounded by the royal family's trophies, polo photographs, and memorabilia; it is the most relaxed and personal room in the house. The Colonnade, named for its high arches, is the place for breakfast, high tea, and all-day dining — chandeliers above, floor-to-ceiling windows opening onto sweeping views of the lawns. And 51 Shades of Pink is the palace's signature formal restaurant, its walls covered in hot pink inspired by the City Palace courtyard, which receives morning light and serves breakfast and lunch with a distinct sense of celebration.

Experience

The palace itself offers as much to explore as the city around it. A guided walk through the interiors, followed by an exclusive visit to the royal family's private quarters, is one of the more unusual things a guest can do in Jaipur. The Jaipur Polo Team has a long and distinguished legacy; in-house guests have complimentary access to matches during the polo season. Beyond the palace, the City Palace — a short drive away — houses Chandra Mahal, the residential palace, which offers exclusive tours through seven floors of themed rooms, served with tea or champagne.

The PDKF Store, a fair trade and women's empowerment project of Princess Diya Kumari, sells finely crafted souvenirs made by local artisans; it is one of the more meaningful places to shop in a city full of markets.
