Built in the late 1700s by the Dudhoria family, Bari Kothi is an elegant building - a fusion of Greek, Roman, and French architectural influences. Some three hundred years ago, the Dudhorias who came to be known as the Sheherwali merchant community, journeyed from Rajasthan to settle in Bengal, building thriving enterprises and considerable wealth along the Hooghly river near Murshidabad.

Meticulously restored, the mansion reopened as a heritage hotel in 2018. Today, it unfolds in a symphony of rich textiles, chequered tiles, and ornate windows - echoes of opulence of wealthy merchants at every turn. Meandering corridors open into sunlit chowks ( courtyards ) adorned with patterned glass and mosaic floors, while guest suites are decorated with period furniture and fine fabrics.

Leisure spaces include a library, music room, serene courtyards, and elegant lounges names as per their commitment - Janana Chowk, Gaddi Ghar, Halwai Khana, Gulabi Chawara - along with a tranquil riverside café.

Once an opulent 18th-century capital, its prosperity drew merchant families from across the subcontinent and beyond, alongside European trading powers such as the British East India Company. Today, its palaces and pathways still whisper of a time gone by, speaking a language of commerce, culture, and quiet grandeur. That Bari Kothi stands a living heritage is to offer many things at once. From the gentle welcoming culture of Bengali homes, to a cuisine adapted to its new home in Bengal, to art and performing arts that find continuity through tourism.

Design & Concept

A merchant's residence repurposed for tourism, Bari Kothi reflects the layered cultural history of Murshidabad — a town shaped by trade, migration, and exchange. The house combines European classical influences with the spatial logic of a traditional Indian haveli, organised around courtyards, shaded corridors, and inward-looking living spaces suited to Bengal’s climate. The restoration approach was guided by continuity rather than reinvention. Original architectural elements — mosaic and chequered floors, stained glass, carved woodwork, and period furniture — were preserved and repaired, allowing the mansion’s material history to remain visible. Spaces such as Janana Chowk, Gaddi Ghar, and the Durbar Hall retain their original proportions as per social relevance of the time they were envisaged, now adapted gently for contemporary use in hospitality. Rather than imposing a new aesthetic, the design allows the house to function as a lived environment — where domestic scale, light-filled courtyards, and layered textures create an atmosphere of inhabited spaces rather than forced nostalgia.

Know Your Host

Today, Darshan Dudhoria and his sister Lipika Dudhoria stand as the custodians of Bari Kothi. By the mid-20th century, as many Sheherwali community families relocated to Kolkata and the Dudhorias’ silk ventures expanded, the mansion was left unoccupied for nearly five decades, slipping quietly into decay. In 2015, the siblings returned with a singular vision- to restore their ancestral home for future generations. A Canadian architect and conservation specialist was commissioned, and a team of over 100 artisans and craftsmen brought the palace back to life. The ambitious restoration, affectionately titled Project Priceless, transformed Bari Kothi into the region’s first self-sustaining heritage hotel. A natural raconteur, Darshan today leads guests through a living archive - where every corridor, courtyard, and carved window holds a story waiting to be revealed.

Cuisine at Bari Kothi is central to the experience — a refined celebration of predominantly vegetarian gastronomy that bridges the flavours of western and eastern India. Rajasthani culinary traditions of gram flour, lentils, and pulses meet Bengal’s fresh greens and aromatic spices, creating a repertoire of distinctive savoury and sweet dishes. Murshidabad’s famed mango legacy remains especially memorable. Once home to over 200 varieties, these celebrated fruits from the region are transformed into desserts, sherbets, chutneys, jams, and preserves. Breakfast by the river offers a gentle beginning to the day, while meals unfold across three atmospheric venues: Naubat Khana, a Mughal-inspired dining room; Zareen Mahal, radiant in gold; and the historic Durbar Hall, centred around an 18-seater table beneath a 250-year-old chandelier once shared by Nawabs and British officials.
