Destination

Jaisalmer Fort, Rajasthan's second oldest and one of the world's few surviving living (residents inside) forts, rises majestically from the Thar desert. This honey-coloured sandstone citadel still houses thousands of residents within its narrow streets. Merchant havelis with intricate stone carvings, Jain temples dating back to the 15th century, and small homes can also be found on the winding streets. Beyond the fort lies the former capital, Lodhurva, and Gadisar Lake—a 600-year-old reservoir. Killa Bhawan occupies three of the fort's 99 bastions, providing a bird 's-eye view of the landscape around it.

Design & Concept

Killa Bhawan occupies three restored bastions within the fort’s defensive walls. The eight rooms retain the citadel's architectural character, with carved stone details, colourful interiors and antique furnishings. Terraces and balconies open onto sweeping views of the fort palace, the city below and the desert horizon. The property maintains a simple, intimate atmosphere, allowing the living fort itself to remain central.

Hosts

Luca Borella first arrived in Jaisalmer in 1989 while travelling through India researching traditional textiles for his fashion business. Drawn by the character of the city and the life of the fort, he returned frequently before eventually purchasing a bastion within the citadel. After restoring the structure in keeping with its historic style, he opened Killa Bhawan as a small heritage guesthouse that reflects his long association with Jaisalmer.

Facilities

Every room features air conditioning and heating for year-round comfort, and the recently updated bathrooms include showers. Various terraces command the finest sunset views over Jaisalmer, the fort palace and the desert beyond. Free WiFi is available throughout, and complimentary mineral water is available in all rooms. The shop Sonar Killa, attached to sister property KB Lodge, offers a wide selection of cashmere pashminas from Luca's own weavers, shawls, stoles, home textiles, antiques, handicrafts and local products, including sandstone objects and embroidered items.

Dining

Killa Bhawan does not operate a full restaurant, though breakfast can be prepared on request. Many guests choose to dine at KB Café, which Luca also owns and which is located nearby within the fort. The cafe serves a mix of global flavours, including Rajasthani and Italian specialities, along with coffee, tea and lassi. The cafe welcomes you for any meal of the day.

Patwon Ki Haveli

Just a stone's throw from Jaisalmer Fort, Patwon Ki Haveli is a cluster of five grandiose havelis (mansions), famous for their intricate architecture and ornate carvings. The buildings offer insight into the lifestyle and trading history of Jaisalmer’s merchant families.

Gadisar Lake

This artificial reservoir, a few minutes from the fort, is a peaceful retreat. Early mornings or late afternoons are perfect for visiting; you can enjoy a quiet boat ride or feed the numerous catfish at the lake’s edge. The surrounding temples and shrines add a spiritual dimension to the site, making it a serene place to relax and soak in the local culture.

Kuldhara

About 20 kilometres from Jaisalmer lies Kuldhara, an abandoned village mysteriously deserted overnight in 1825. Once a prosperous Paliwal Brahmin settlement, it's now a haunting landscape of sandstone ruins, roofless houses, and empty courtyards. Local legend claims villagers cursed the land before fleeing—nearly two centuries later, it remains eerily uninhabited.
