The House of MG's neoclassical design, its stately facade in alternating white and red stone — gives the building a presence that few hotels in India can match. Comprising the original House of MG and the CG Wing, both restored to their early 20th-century character, the property unfolds through enclosed courtyards, shaded verandahs, and beautiful details: etched glass at The Green House café drawn from the latticework of the mosque opposite, a lotus pool whose hand-painted ceiling depicts the Mangaldas family's devotion to Shrinathji.

The Ahmedabad Trunk Textile Gallery — displaying the family's collection of rare saris, shawls, silver, and jewellery alongside Gujarat's weaving, tie-dye, block printing, and embroidery traditions — runs through the property like a second spine.

The House of MG has 38 rooms, designed around the original format of a family home — no two are exactly alike. Modern Heritage Classic Rooms are compact, with handcrafted furniture and king or twin beds. Classic Plus Rooms offer more space, some with balconies or terraces. Grand and Grand Plus Rooms add generous seating and garden or courtyard views, with a dining space in some. Grand Magnum Rooms include a lounge and a small book library.

Grand Suites and Grand Magnum Suites, once family residences, retain historic details including an ancient water-recharge well in select rooms. The Kanchangauri Suite offers a kitchenette for longer stays; the Mangaldas Suite — the former patriarch's home — has a study, dining area, and direct views of the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque.

Destination

Also known as Amdavad, Ahmedabad is India's first UNESCO World Heritage City — a distinction that reflects 600 years of layered history still visible in its streets. The Sabarmati Ashram, where Gandhi built the foundations of India's independence movement, is here. So is the Jama Masjid, the carved Adalaj Stepwell, the Teen Darwaja triple gateway, and the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, with its stone jali screen, considered one of the finest examples of medieval Indian craftsmanship.

At the heart of the old city stands The House of MG, opposite that mosque, one of Ahmedabad's oldest surviving heritage buildings. Built by the Mangaldas family in two phases — the first wing in 1904, the second in 1924 — it fell largely derelict by the 1950s before being restored over two decades into the hotel it is today. Every beam, piece of furniture, and textile in the building is handcrafted, most of them made from repurposed materials. It is a building that has been made twice and is better for it.

Design and Concept

The restoration of The House of MG, ongoing for over two decades, is handcrafted throughout. Every item of furniture is made by hand, primarily from repurposed material.

Textiles are upcycled or sourced from Gujarati handloom weavers. Public spaces are largely non-air-conditioned, with openable windows; the building breathes with the city rather than sealing itself from it.

Solar-assisted power serves electricity and water heating. The hotel also claims the highest green cover among properties in the UNESCO World Heritage City zone of Ahmedabad.

Know Your Host

Abhay Mangaldas restored the first wing of his great-grandfather's 1904 mansion—to The House of MG. A scion of one of Ahmedabad's established textile families, he serves as Convener of INTACH Ahmedabad and Managing Trustee of the Shreyas Foundation, keeping the hotel rooted in the city's cultural and social life. The Bucky Dome on the property, a futuristic public structure, now functions as a space for creative and artistic dialogue open to the city.

Dining

The House of MG has four dining settings. Agashiye, on a rooftop terrace, serves a daily-changing fixed Gujarati thali in bronzeware — appetisers outside first, then the main course inside, with the old city laid out below.

The Green House is a glass-walled courtyard café serving fresh, seasonal Indian and international food, cooked to order, with views of the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque.

Pol Kholi at Mangaldas ni Haveli II is a relaxed heritage café for light meals in a restored old-city setting.

Darwin Bucky at Mangalbaug Residency serves Indian and continental food in a tree-shaded outdoor space alongside a gallery.

Experiences

The hotel's experience centre offers several ways into the city. Three curated Heritage Walks trace over 600 years of Ahmedabad's past on foot. An electric rickshaw tour covers Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, Jama Masjid, and the Old Pol neighbourhood.

For those who want to stay closer to the building, the Ahmedabad Trunk Textile Gallery — weaving, embroidery, block printing, tie-dye, rare saris, shawls, silverware, and the family's photograph collection — can occupy hours without leaving the property.

The Lotus Pool, 17 metres long with a hand-painted lotus-themed ceiling and a floating sculpture at its centre, is the most architecturally interesting indoor pool in the city.

The Chakra Spa offers body massage, body polish, aromatherapy, and head and foot treatments in two treatment rooms. A fully equipped gym is on-site.

Guests can also pre-book overnight stays in the Mangaldas ni Havelis — two restored havelis in the inner lanes of the old city. The idea is to walk there after dinner, wake to the sounds of the settlement, eat a simple breakfast, and walk back to The House of MG in the morning.

Located about an hour from the hotel, the Sabarmati Riverfront is known for its scenic river views and lively atmosphere, particularly in the evenings when locals gather to unwind. Renting a bicycle is a great way to explore the stretch at a relaxed pace.

Explore Bhadra Fort and Teen Darwaja
