Your Stay at Windermere Estate, Munnar, Kerala

Windermere Estate is surrounded by private coffee and cardamom plantations, with uninterrupted views of mountains, tea estates, and forested slopes. The grounds are carefully tended, with indigenous trees and plants thriving across the estate. In spring, orange trumpet flowers and bougainvillaea bloom across the gardens, accompanied by a steady chorus of birds.

Windermere is shaped by stories that surface naturally around evening campfires, often accompanied by a cup of ‘jungle tea’. Accommodation is housed in bungalows inspired by traditional plantation architecture, with high gabled roofs, terracotta and wooden floors, solid teak furniture, and hand-embroidered linen.

The rooms are spacious, filled with natural light, and intentionally uncluttered. Cottages, garden rooms, and plantation villas open out to views of hills, valleys, and the shifting mists that define Munnar. The estate’s planning ensures each unit faces outward toward plantation or valley views while maintaining privacy. Landscaping retains existing trees wherever possible, allowing the estate to feel integrated rather than imposed.

Winderemere Estate

Destination

There is something unmistakable about Munnar and its mists. At times, it feels like walking through clouds, with layers of mist settling gently over the mountains. Named after the confluence of three rivers, Munnar lies at the heart of South India’s largest tea-growing region. Rolling hills unfold in emerald waves of tea, carefully contoured and clipped, while the air carries the scent of cardamom from nearby spice plantations. Once known as the High Range of Travancore, Munnar today remains a vital centre for high-altitude tea estates, many of which are now managed by the Kannan Devan Hills Plantation Company. Windermere Estate is reached from Cochin Airport in just over three hours along a scenic hill road.

Know Your Host

Dr Simon John established Windermere Estate as an expression of his long association with Munnar’s plantation landscape. What began as a family retreat evolved into a hospitality venture shaped by personal storytelling and sustained by a long-standing local team. His approach emphasises warmth, continuity, and plantation rhythm rather than resort scale or spectacle.

Facilities

Interiors are designed around comfort and simplicity. Each room includes a water station, tea and coffee facilities, mats, flashlights, and intercoms. Beds are generously appointed with soft pillows, clean duvets, and cushions. Bathrooms feature rain showers, quality toiletries, continuous hot and cold water, and luggage racks. Terraces and balconies invite hours of reading, birdwatching, or simply taking in the changing light at sunrise and sunset.

Windermere Estate Dining

Dining

Dining takes place at The Barn, where menus range from local dishes such as hoppers and North Indian fare to comfort foods including soups, sandwiches, and pastas. Guests can enjoy multi-course dinners, simple lunches, and hearty breakfasts, always accompanied by locally sourced fruits. A selection of fine teas and freshly brewed coffee completes the experience.

Experiences

The reception block houses a lounge and library, both WiFi-enabled and designed for quiet downtime. In the garden, The Hut serves evening tea and snacks. A rocky outcrop within the estate has been safely adapted as a viewpoint for watching Munnar’s sunsets. The pool offers respite during warmer months. Daily plantation walks introduce guests to estate life, local flora, and the region's native bird species.
