Sustainability Story of Shahpura Bagh

Shahpura Bagh is, at its heart, a water story. In a region where water has always been destiny, the estate sits within a remarkable network of 250 manmade lakes, built between 1850 and 1930, forming an interconnected harvesting system that shaped the ecology and economy of the area long before sustainability became a fashionable word.

Its Pinwheel story begins with this inherited intelligence. Channels are cleaned, lakes are dredged, and greywater is recycled through soak pits for landscaping and gardens. Solar heating is used for water, while energy-saving bulbs, keys, and room design support energy conservation. These choices do not feel imposed upon the property. They feel like continuations of an older wisdom.

Waste is handled with an eye for reuse. Single-use plastic is discouraged, construction waste has been repurposed through crazy paving, and lime flooring has been mixed with waste marble powder. It is an elegant reminder that luxury need not be wasteful to be beautiful.

The social fabric is equally important. Staff are local and hired across several tribal communities, maintaining diversity and inclusion. They are trained, multi-skilled, and rotated across roles to keep work meaningful and rewarding. Heritage is preserved through the mansion and Fort Dhikola, restored using age-old building techniques and local artisans. Phad painting families are supported, helping sustain a rare local art tradition. The water system has also regenerated indigenous flora and created a thriving bird habitat.
